

The Evolution of a Flutist
​
Emily’s love for music began at the age of 10 when she first discovered the flute. Her passion for the instrument and dedication to her craft have driven her to achieve success both as a performer and teacher. Emily’s journey has been shaped by the guidance of exceptional mentors, including Cathy Ransom-Karoly, Jim Walker, John Barcellona, Diana Morgan, Cynthia Ellis, and Jane Masur, each helping her to develop a unique and expressive voice on the flute.


A Blossoming Career
Emily’s career is marked by a string of notable achievements. As a soloist, she has performed with the Palomar Symphony Orchestra, presenting W.A. Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G Major, and earned third place in the 2023 La Jolla Symphony Young Artist Competition. She has also recorded for popular music tracks, including recording for the song "Crazy" by EDM artist Wooli featuring Casey Cook.

She has been the recipient of multiple scholarships, including the Sigma Alpha Iota Alumnae Chapter Scholarship, Bob Cole Scholarship, Ivie Wickam Scholarship, Neva May Pipes Endowment, and Palomar Performing Arts Scholarship.

Her performance experience spans various prestigious ensembles, and she currently holds the third flute/piccolo position with the Civic Orchestra of Los Angeles. Additionally, she has performed with groups such as the Modesto Symphony Orchestra, Primrose Competition Orchestra, American Youth Symphony, Music Academy of the West Orchestra, USC Thornton Symphony Orchestra, and the San Diego Philharmonic, gracing iconic venues like Walt Disney Concert Hall, Granada Theater, Bovard Auditorium, The Carpenter Center, and Copley Symphony Hall.


Education and Training

Emily’s educational journey is marked by excellence and dedication to mastering the flute. She earned her Graduate Certificate and Master of Music in Flute Performance from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where she studied under Jim Walker and Cathy Ransom-Karoly. Her foundation was laid at California State University, Long Beach, where she obtained her Bachelor of Music under the guidance of Dr. John Barcellona. Emily’s training has also included valuable mentorship from Diana Morgan, Cynthia Ellis, and Jane Masur, each contributing to her growth as a versatile and expressive flutist.


A Passion For Teaching
Emily has always had a passion for education, and wanted to be a teacher prior to deciding on a career in flute. Outside of her performance career, Emily has cultivated a successful private studio, Harrington Flute Studio. Since 2014, she has run her private flute studio, offering private flute instruction for students of all ages and levels. She is also an active flute coach at several schools across Southern California, where she has earned a reputation for her patient and supportive teaching style. Emily's passion for nurturing young musicians and guiding them in their development is the pride of her career.

Life Away From Flute

In her (rare) free time, Emily enjoys doing yoga, cooking, and enjoying time with her family, friends, husband (when they aren't playing duets), and her pets/studio mascots Peewee and Anya!
